Government Promises To Not “Over-Burden” Landlords With Regulation
The Government has pledged to keep regulation and bureaucracy down to a minimum in an attempt to aid the private rented sector.
Speaking at the first National Landlords Assocaition National Conference in Birmingham, Iain Wright MP, minister with responsibility for the private-rented sector, said the Government was committed to not bringing forward “knee-jerk legislation”.
The minister promised to help the sector grow, and to concentrate on those unscrupulous landlords and agents giving the sector a bad name.
Wright said the private-rented sector had become a “great tool to help house the people of this country” and that he wanted to see the sector “not just survive over the coming months and years but thrive”.
The Government will be looking to the private rented sector in 2009 as housing remains restricted and more and more people are falling off the mortgage map.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, says: “The minister has re-affirmed what the NLA has known for years: the people who suffer the most from burdensome regulation are reputable landlords. The rogue operators will usually avoid being noticed; what we must now do is ensure they are not allowed to drop further under the radar.”
